25 Things for researchers: engaging with social media

In July 2010, the RIN published a report, ‘If you build it, will they come? How researchers perceive and use web 2.0’, which looked at whether researchers had adopted Web 2.0 tools in the course of their work.

The report found that regular use of web 2.0 is not currently widespread among UK researchers. It recommended that “…if experimentation and innovation are to be supported and encouraged, and not stifled, universities, funders and members of the research community will need to:

  • encourage open-ended experimentation, and avoid the risk of stifling innovation by attempts to impose particular systems or concepts of how they will be used;
  • establish mechanisms through which researchers can share information about useful developments in services and tools;
  • undertake further research to understand the ways in which use of web 2.0 develops;
  • consider how policy and practice might be developed to ensure that innovation takes full account of – and does not undermine – the long-established key functions of the scholarly communications process, including registration, certification, and preservation”.

In response to the finding of this report, the University of Huddersfield and the RIN are collaborating to launch 25 Things for Researchers, building on work already undertaken at Huddersfield.  25 Things is based on Learning 2.0, a staff development programme developed by Helene Blowers at the Public Library of Charlotte & Mecklenburg County (PLCMC), USA in 2006.

25 Things for Researchers will introduce new PhD students in Huddersfield to a wide range of web 2.0 tools and techniques via an eleven-week online learning programme. Each ‘thing’ will be presented on a WordPress blog, which will be available to other Universities to ‘steal ideas’ and to develop some of the recommendations put forward in the RIN report.

We are currently putting the content together, but would like to hear from anyone who would like to suggest potential Web 2.0 ‘things’ of particular interest to researchers.

Please contact g.stone@hud.ac.uk or Ellen.collins@rin.ac.uk or tweet with the hashtag #L2researchers.

I also think for researche, open-ended experimentation should use and for more  success  they can establish mechanisms through which researchers can share information about useful developments in services and tools.

Social Media is all about Interacting and communicating with a given audience. Take any   Orlando Nightclub for example.

There is massive competition for patrons between Orlando sports bars and nightclubs; particularly on International Drive. The Venues that reach out via social media are the establishments that will survive long term.

I actually think that social media is a very useful tool for researchers and the public in general. It allows people to recommend anything and everything to their social group, allowing for more informed choices, particularly useful when making big purchases, such as buying a new car, or re-doing your house’s upvc windows.

Anonymous said on 25 July 2011 at 7:57pm:

I think social media is warping the views of people. The majority absorb what they read on social sites as the Bible truth. Sad day we live.

Anonymous said on 21 July 2011 at 6:42pm:

I was just reading a blog by another gentleman studying the effects of social media. We certainly don’t need more social media. People are losing the lost art of conversation. However, having said that, it’s a tool that is as effective as we use it for. Considering the wave of internet usage and Google declaring the importance of social media, I can’t see it slowing down for the foreseeable future. It sounds very interesting and I’d like to see more of your research.
