Appraisal and Selection of Datasets for Preservation

This DCC briefing paper on appraisal and selection contains references to a number of other relevant papers, and is probably a recognised starting point for those who may need to be offered an overview of the field if they are not especially familiar with the the application of archival appraisal concepts to research data.
There is an issue as to whether archival appraisal criteria can be used to select datasets for ongoing retention and curation, or whether there are alternative means to decide which datasets should, or must, be kept assuming policymakers will be working on the assumption that it is not practical to keep everything.
